Your first time on a sunbed is usually a short session, one that’s fully tailored to your skin type. A friendly member of our team will walk you through how everything works, including eye protection, and set the initial session length.
What happens during your first sunbed session
After you arrive at The Tan Station for the first time, you’ll be welcomed by a friendly team member, who will run you through a quick skin-type registration process. The Fitzpatrick scale is a simple classification that grades skin from Type 1 (very fair and always burns) to Type 6 (deeply pigmented). It determines whether sunbeds are suitable for you, and if so, what session length to begin with.
Next, you’ll be shown to your private tanning bay, and our staff member will explain how to operate the bed, where the stop button is, how to position your goggles correctly, and how everything works. Your session will only begin once you’re comfortable.
Your first session will be short. This is completely intentional, as it’s not about getting a tan from day one but rather about gradually introducing your skin to UV and seeing how it responds before your next visit.
Not sure which bed to start with? Our megaSun bed range includes the latest LED technology with lay-down and stand-up options. Your team member will recommend the right one based on your session goals and skin type.

How your session time is decided
The session length on your first visit is based entirely on the skin type you select upon registration. This is a very important part of your tanning journey and one that any professional salon follows.
The Tan Station is a member of The Sunbed Association (TSA) and therefore follows the code of practice for skin type based on the Fitzpatrick scale. This grades skin types from 1 through to 6, with skin type 1 – very fair skin that always burns and rarely tans, not being recommended for sunbed sessions. If you’re unsure whether this would apply to your skin type, speak to a member of our team before booking.
As a general guide, for the first time, avoid fixed minutes and begin slowly.
- Skin type 2 (fair)
Start between 3 and 4 minutes if the tan technician agrees, based on your skin type assessment. - Skin type 3 (light to medium)
4-5 minutes is the typical length of a first-time session. - Skin type 4 (medium to olive)
5-6 minutes is a good indicator for this skin type. - Skin type 5 (darker skin)
5-8 minutes is usually recommended.
A member of The Tan Station team sets the time with you, and we’ll run through a consultation at reception on your first visit. For a full breakdown of what each skin type means for you and your tanning sessions, read our Fitzpatrick skin types guide.
Can you burn on a sunbed?
Yes, absolutely, you could. Sunbeds emit both UVA and UVB rays. Overexposure causes the same burn reaction as natural sunlight. The risk is higher for those with fairer skin, those who skip eye protection (which is why it is a must at The Tan Station), and anyone who exceeds recommended session times. The Tan Station follows UK regulations and the Sunbed Association’s code of practice to ensure that every first visit includes skin-type registration and a discussion around tanning goals. These steps are in place to reduce the risk of overexposure, provided you follow the guidance provided.

How to prepare for your first sunbed session
A little prep goes a long way. These steps give you the best possible result and help avoid the most common first-timer mistakes.
01 – Exfoliate 24 hours before
Removing dead skin cells that can block an even result means your session tans fresh, even skin. Don’t exfoliate right before, as your skin needs a little time to settle after exfoliating before UV exposure.
02 – Moisturise, but time it right.
Hydrated skin tans more evenly. Moisturise well the day before, but avoid thick creams or heavy oils immediately before your session, as they can prevent UV light from reaching the skin evenly. We have tanning lotions and prep products suited to all skin types.
03 – Remove makeup.
Makeup can block UV and cause patchy, uneven results. Come in with a clean face, or remove it before entering your tanning bay.
04 – Don’t shave immediately before.
Freshly shaved skin is more sensitive to UV, so it is best to leave at least a few hours between shaving and your session.
05 – Goggles are non-negotiable.
Closing your eyes is not enough protection, as UV passes through the eyelids, so just keeping your eyes shut is not enough. You must wear goggles for every session, with no exceptions. You can purchase goggles at reception if you don’t have your own. And no, sunglasses won’t provide adequate coverage.
06 – No perfume or deodorant.
Fragrances and antiperspirants can react with UV light, causing skin irritation or uneven patches, so keep the areas you are tanning product-free.
One more thing – medication. If you are currently taking any medication, please check with your doctor whether it causes photosensitivity before booking your session. There are common types of medications, including antibiotics, antihistamines, and some acne treatments, that can cause photosensitivity. You must inform a member of staff before booking any session if you are taking any medication.
Bring your ID. You must be 18 or over to use a sunbed, and photo ID is required on your first visit. There are no exceptions under UK Law.

What happens after your session?
Your first session is now complete, and you are no longer a first-time tanner. Here’s what to expect. Know that melanin continues to develop up to 48 hours after a session, so don’t expect any colour to be visible as soon as you leave the salon. Sometimes your skin will appear darker 24-48 hours after, but also your first session may not give you noticeable results until a few more sessions, especially if they were short.
After your first visit:
- Drink water and keep hydrated to support your skin’s recovery after UV exposure
- Do not shower for at least 2-3 hours
- Use lukewarm and not hot water in the shower, along with a gentle wash, as these can both strip moisture and dull colour
- Moisturise well after showering
- Leave 48 hours after your first session before booking your next.
For a full post-session routine, read our guide on how to make your sunbed tan last longer.
How many sessions will you need?
Remember, your first session is an introduction, so as we mentioned earlier, don’t expect visible colour from day one. It is common to notice a change after sessions 2-3, and it typically takes 4-8 sessions over 3-4 weeks to build a visible base tan, depending on your skin type.
For a full breakdown by skin type, including a pre-holiday session plan, read our guide on how many sunbed sessions you need to get a tan.
Please note: The information on this page is intended as general guidance only. Skin type classifications are based on the Fitzpatrick scale and determined by the client’s admissions upon registration. Session times and suitability for sunbed use will always be confirmed by our trained team in the studio based on your selected skin type category. As a member of The Sunbed Association, The Tan Station adheres to the association’s full code of practice, which includes a skin-type registration process for all new clients. If you are unsure about your suitability for sunbed use, please speak to a member of our team before booking.
Frequently asked questions on tanning for the first time
Depending on your skin type, one of our trained technicians will set the time after your skin type consultation, which usually ranges from 3 to 6+ minutes, and the team can run through your goals with you.
Can beginners use sunbeds?
At The Tan Station, beginners new to tanning are welcomed by our friendly team and taken through a skin-type registration process on their first visit. First-time visitors are then walked through how the machines work, and are recommended a starting session length for the initial tanning session. This is subject to skin type being suitable for sunbed tanning. Sunbed use is not recommended for skin type 1, which is very fair skin that always burns. Our trained team will walk you through everything on your visit.
Do you need sunbed cream for your first session?
You don’t have to bring one, and you can speak with a member of staff when you arrive. We have products for different skin types, whether or not you have tattoos, and we can recommend a beginner-friendly lotion matched to your skin type.
Can you burn on your first sunbed session?
Yes, just like with being in the sun, if you overexpose your skin to UV light, you can burn. This is why first-time sessions are kept short, and leaving the recommended 48 hours between sessions significantly reduces the risk.
Can you burn on a sunbed?
Yes, you can – if your session time isn’t set correctly for your skin type. That’s exactly why we ensure skin type registration for every first-timer before they go in. Starting too long, too soon is the most common mistake people make at other studios. We make sure it doesn’t happen here.
What should I wear on a sunbed?
Be comfortable. You are in a private tanning bay, so the choice is yours – a bikini, underwear or nothing. Please ensure you remove all jewellery and watches before getting onto the sunbed, and wear goggles.
How many sessions before I see a difference?
Most people notice a change typically after sessions 2-3, but a visible base tan can take 4-8 sessions over 3-4 weeks, depending on your skin type.
Do I need to bring ID?
Yes. You must be over 18 to use a sunbed, and photo ID is required on your first visit to The Tan Station.
